CROSSING THROUGH THE LIGHT

Bazaine, Bissière, Elvire Jan, Esteve, Le Moal, Manessier, Singier: Non-figurative French art, 1950-1980

18 OCT. 2019 – 19 JAN. 2020

In the wake of the Second World War, Roger Bissière, Elvire Jan, Jean Bazaine, Jean Le Moal, Gustave Singier and Alfred Manessier founded an artistic movement referred to as “non-figuration”.

Rapidly freed of cubist and surrealistic influences, these artists sought a path between figuration and abstraction, intent to transmit the emotions aroused by natural phenomena, specifically the manifestation of light, each striving to translate the force of propagation, movement, bursts, reflections, and transparency according to his own sensitivity. Organised in partnership with the Swiss Jean and Suzanne Planque Foundation, this retrospective exhibition of this still unknown group of artists of post-war French art is an astounding echo to the adventure of the Roubaix Group to which La Piscine has now dedicated a permanent section.
