ABDELKADER, EMIR OF THE RESISTANCE
9 MARCH – 2 JUNE 2019
A religious and military leader, an Islamic scholar and Sufi, Emir Abdelkader (1808- 1883) united Algerian tribes to fight against the French invasion. An emblematic personality, very respectful of his opponents’ rights, at the time he drew unanimous admiration and received honours and awards from around the world.
The exhibition organised around portraits of the emir loaned by the Castle of Versailles presents the emir’s career and heritage. Considered since 1962 to be the founder of the modern Algerian state, he remains a very living figure in contemporary Algeria and his presence in La Piscine’s Algerian Spring project constitutes a strong symbolic element for this new season.
