Forbidden colours: Contemporary South Korean ceramics

25 June — 4 Sept. 2022

For the first time, La Piscine is joining forces with the Triennale internationale de céramique contemporaine, Ceramic Art Andenne, in Belgium.

The brainchild of a group of fans, the ceramics event at Andenne was launched in 1988 and its first two editions were entitled ‘Viens voir un pot’. The event took the name of Biennale de la Céramique d’Andenne in 1992 and swiftly attracted an audience of connoisseurs and renowned artists. It is now devoted entirely to showcasing contemporary ceramic art. Since the event was no longer a biennial but a triennial, it changed its name and became Ceramic Art Andenne for the 2018 edition. It is a special place to discuss, discover, touch, listen to and see what is going on in the world of ceramics, in its various forms.

For some years, this event has showcased the finest contemporary ceramic artists from a specially invited country. Korea is the country chosen for 2022.

The Triennale team, with the assistance of the Korea Ceramic Foundation, has chosen 10 contemporary Korean ceramic artists.

Steeped in the tradition of ceramics, each of the selected artists brings their subtlety and technical mastery to bear, bringing out everything that the homeland means to them. Guided by what they know and what they are still learning, they create extraordinary pieces, a mix of the traditional and the contemporary.

Studying the old to create the new,
Honouring culture and reviving its spirit,
Reinterpreting secular forms and traditional styles and tastes to display them differently,
Recalling the sensations of the past, remembering landscapes and bringing them once again to life.
This year, the works of these artists will also be presented on both sides of the border, in Andenne and Roubaix.
